How pace and speed are calculated
Pace is how long it takes to cover a fixed distance (minutes per kilometer or mile) — the lower the number, the faster you're moving. Speed is the reverse view: how much distance you cover in a fixed amount of time.
The formulas
Pace = total time ÷ distance
Speed = distance ÷ total time
For example, running 5 km in 25 minutes gives a pace of 5:00 per km (25 ÷ 5) and a speed of 12 km/h (5 ÷ (25/60)).
Frequently asked questions
What's a good running pace for beginners?
Most beginner runners fall somewhere between 6:00 and 8:00 per km (roughly 9:40–13:00 per mile), but the "right" pace is whatever lets you hold a conversation comfortably — speed matters far less than consistency when you're starting out.
How is race finish time predicted from pace?
Multiply your target pace by the race distance. For example, a 5:30/km pace over a 10 km race gives an estimated finish time of 55 minutes. This calculator shows pace and speed directly, so you can do that multiplication for any distance.
