The three formulas

What is A% of B?  →  (A ÷ 100) × B
A is what percent of B?  →  (A ÷ B) × 100
Percent change from A to B?  →  ((B − A) ÷ A) × 100

For example, 20% of 50 is 10. Meanwhile, 20 is 40% of 50. And going from 50 to 65 is a 30% increase.

Frequently asked questions

Why is percent change different from "percent of"?

"20% of 50" asks for a portion of a number. "Percent change" asks how much a number moved relative to its starting point — it's always measured against the original (first) value, which is why the order of A and B matters.

Can percent change be negative?

Yes. If the second value is smaller than the first, the result is negative, indicating a decrease rather than an increase — this calculator labels it as a decrease automatically.
